Discovered and claimed by Columbus during his third voyage in 1498 and site of Villa de Santiago, a seasonal pearl fishing camp established in 1500. Nueva Cadiz, the first Spanish city in what is now Venezuela, was founded here in 1521. In December 1541, a devestating earthquake and tsunami destroyed much of Nueva Cadiz and it's population was greatly reduced. Later in September 1542, Francisco de Orellana and the other 42 survivors of the first expedition to cross South America, by sailing down the entire length of the Amazon River, rejoined their Spanish countrymen here in September 1542 (after exiting the mouth of the Amazon River and sailing north along the South American coast).

Amazing xerophilus landscapes, friendly shores to have fun and there's a bunch of Sea-life near shores, perfect for scuba and snorquel practicing. Hikes in the inland of the Island is 100% recommend, there's not many habitants; just Fisherman's Rancherios, that depends only on Sea Labors and Tourism. There's in the North side, a >50 years shipwreck, that holds a beautiful artificial Coral Reef perfect for those who wants to scuba or snorquel.

Remember the tsunami on the 24th of December 1541 that killed everyone on the Island? This island is truly beautiful and very special.
