Pastelitos La Florida

The queues don't lie: this pastelitos' place -'Empanadas Chicuelo' is its legal name-, is a classic in the area, serving their wheat-dough fried empanadas ('pastelitos') for over three decades at La Florida. Their savoury offers are cheese, ham and cheese, minced beef (strong bond onions and my personal favourite) and shark (which is a local hit, and a bit of an oddity: shark empanadas tend to be of the maize kind, and more common on the coast). Fresh juices -wirh added sugar- are on offer (also to-go, but no lids!): watermelon, cantaloupe, guava, and if you're lucky, passion fruit. The pastelitos are freshly fried and pipin' hot; if you order them to go, beware: grease seeps through the paper bags. They also offer ready-to-fry tequeños and empanada dough. Cash or debit only.
