Colon General Hospital In Santa Bárbara del Zulia, a medical dispensary operated for nearly fifty years, on Calle de Aurira. In 1946, on the initiative of Father Gonzalo Sarcos Díaz, the Colon Health Center was established, with Antonio Molina Silva, Ricardo Gutiérrez Badell, Fernando Rincón and Jesús Quiroz Moronta as directors. In 1947, construction began on the hospital that bears the name of Hospital Colon on Calle La Marina (today Paseo Colon) in San Carlos del Zulia and on the left bank of the Escalante River, but because it was built on the banks of Escalante, it suffered numerous floods and therefore the need to build another hospital was seen, which was done in the town of El Guayabo of the then-found municipality of the Colon district. In the first government of Rafael Caldera, the construction of another hospital began, which was called Hospital General Santa Bárbara, inaugurated on February 12, 1977 by the first lady Blanca Rodríguez de Perez, with Dr. Diego Gutiérrez Badell as the first director.
