His work covers all genres, except the theater: poetry, novel, essay, biography, history, criticism. Among his publications there are those who consider the most important From the Conquest to Independence or Three centuries of Cultural History; in it appears the criteria of the modern and capable researcher, open to all tendencies and full of a deep human sense; but the novel biography Pedro Claver, the saint of slaves (1950), and the essays Questions to Europe (1937) and Journey to the dawn (1943) are not of lesser height. Less hierarchical are stories like Los tratos de la noche (1955).
