The image of the Virgin of La Candelaria, which appeared in Zumba, is a painting on a "small board", in which the Blessed Virgin is seen with the Child Jesus in her left arm and in her right hand she holds a candle or a scepter Queen, since both She and the Child Jesus are dressed as Kings with crowns on their heads. The story goes back more than 170 years according to the oral tradition of four or five generations since 1847, and tells that the Virgin appeared on a "little board" to an elderly couple who lived in a house surrounded by cane fields in the Zumba Sur sector. ; The lady found it while she was sweeping the patio of her house and kept the little board with the image of the Virgin without giving it much importance. Then he decided to take her to the parish priest of the town of La Parroquia, who, surprised, placed her in the temple, disappearing from there and reappearing in the lady's house, which happened several times and motivated the dismayed priest to promise the Virgin that every year there would be a dance in this town in commemoration of His Appearance. After a while the Priest ordered the construction of a Chapel to the Virgin to venerate the relic in the place where the tablet appeared, and as a result of that every February 2 and 3 the Feast of the Virgin is held. The Appearance of the Virgen de la Candelaria in Andean lands near La Parroquia Santiago de La Punta de Mérida, in the sector called Zumba, brought a set of events that have to do with the origin of the veneration of the Virgin in the sector; : in the first place, the lady who found the image was able to fulfill her promise to build a Shrine for the Virgin; and second, the participation of the believers together with the vassals of the Virgin in collective union so that on the appointed date the religious acts commemorating this Apparition would take place.
