Pastelería Doris

Pastelería Doris remains, with a number of small pastry shops around the city, a stalwart of an almost bygone era of immigrant-led food businesses from the 1940s and 1950s, particularly of Central European, Spanish or Italian origin (before Portuguese run panaderías became commonplace). Doris is an Italian pastry shop, famed for its puff pastries, marzipan and cakes (particularly Catholic-themed... Easter Colombas, First Communions and Weddings). I am partial to their everyday fare (croissants and savory puffs), and the way they have strived to keep some quality facing shortages and communication problems is admirable (the lack of freshly squeezed orange juice is disheartening). Doris has kept most of its late eighties, early aughts renovations intact, in Formica and chrome decor, but it I still a non glitzy charming Italian shop (with the appropriate amount of curmudgeonly attitude that most pastry chefs have). Not the best of the city (I'd even prefer its stranged sister, Tartufo), but a sure bet nonetheless. There's ample parking, based on a ripping honour system.
