I loved this place, very cheap to get in, learnt a great deal about Vietnamese early history. Nice souvenir shops, there is nice cafe too. A must go stop while on your Hanoi visit.
Holding the title of the oldest national university in Vietnam, gifted students would travel to the Temple of Literature to study the principles of Confucianism. It is awe-inspiring to see such an old landmark (built in 1070) be preserved in the middle of such a bustling city.n.n.nTake a guess as to which Vietnamese bank note this building is featured upon!
If you really want to connect with Vietnam's fascinating history, do it here. Everyone else has talked about the age, it's status as an ancient university etc., I thought about it contextually. I was - for my sins - born in England. At the time the Temple of Literature was constructed, my ancestors had yet to experience the invasion of William, Duke of Normandy. Most of them lived in very crude dwellings of wood, together with their meagre livestock, and life was brutish, short and dirty. Not one in a couple of hundred thousand could read and write, and of those, none were educated as we'd use the term today. At the same time, here in Ha Noi, a university was under construction (education was an old practice by this time) at which people wore silks, composed poetry and philosophy, and thought and wrote of the future. To them, and rightly, my ancestors would have been thought dirty savages. The collective effort and outlook required to build and value such an institution at that time is thought-provoking. Look around, read, enjoy. But please, please, don't just grab selfies and then head off for lunch. Select one of the benches in the grounds and contemplate the idea of a university and that time (1070) and the kind of people who believed it was a necessary addition to their culture
A wonderful quiet oasis in busy Hanoi. Take time to look around. It is only 30,000 VND (£1.00) entry fee and worth every penny. Read all about Confucius and his teachings.
Beautiful, well maintained historical site. Very inspiring. A must visit place in hanoi.
