The ARVN (Army of the Republic of South Vietnam) equivalent of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery in America. Over twenty thousand ARVN troops were buried in the cemetery behind this memorial on the hilltop. Some soldiers remains have been repatriated by family members, some gravesites restored and many are unclaimed. A new memorial has been permitted to be built next to the central stupa a few years ago as well. When the NVA came through in ‘75 they desecrated many of the graves along with the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at this hilltop location. The NVA cemetery across and up the road a little ways is in naturally better nick. Made inaccessible to the public by the government until 1994 and turned into a public cemetery in 2007, if you’re interested in the history of the Vietnam War (or as it’s called today the ‘American War’) era and/or would simply like to pay your respects it’s well worth a visit from Saigon. There are no warriors, they are all reincarnated. Only the temple does not resemble any other temple in Vietnam, not only because of its history but because it was designed in a Japanese style.
