This City has a flair of its own. Many old houses and Buildings but new young generations are starting to modernize their City.The City however became popular because of the unique housing architectures which are built on the sides of the rocky hills. Unique because each house are built with so many window openings. They are grouped together in lines like bundles of houses on the rocky hill with many Windows. That's why they are named the houses with "Thousand Windows and Steps" On the Top of the Mountain is the CITADEL of Berat. In July 2008, this old town (Mangalem district) was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
