It is very interesting for kids, but also adults as it displays old models of trains and vehicles. An English translation would be a plus, it does not exist and also in the winter the interior is very cold. It is cool that you can also go inside them and see all the mechanical features. Also, the view in the little mountain town is wonderful, so definitely worth the journey.
The building is by the train station, infect in this year you have to walk "around" due to the building of the Basetunel. (takes around cca 10-12 min by walk from the platforms). The construction will be finished in 2021.
The Museum has all necessary features beside the exhibition: coffee in an old wagon (!), a gift and book shop and a CHARMING local guide.
The atmosphere of the building is one of the best you expect from a train museum, the themes are well designed, many attractions which can be tried by anybody, the basement, where the feelings of the 19-century-crowd is explained, the smells...
There is a second building (beside the main Museum building) in which many rare locomotives, machines are exhibited. Absolutely worth to visit.
In last autumn a brand new lookout tower has been set by the rail-tracks in front of the entrance of the new tunnel (80 steps wooden one), which is to introduce the idea of the Base Tunnel.
The three attractions + coffee + gift shop requires at least 2,5 hours. Parking is free next to the Museum.
Local guidance is strictly recommended!
Very entertaining exhibition. Lots of small details and there are 4 engines one can climb onto. Very much recommended.
Great museum very informative and little kids will love it
Very interesting museum about railway and particularly Sudbahn history. Good exhibits on the building of the Sudbahn (the first standard gauge railway over the Alps). Friendly people and calm environment. There is also a railway history trail along the Semmering railway line.
