The Parliament of New South Wales is Australia's first Parliament, and its buildings include the oldest building surviving in the Sydney Central Business District. The oldest part of Parliament House was built first as the north wing of the 'Rum Hospital'. As there was no funding from the British government, the hospital was built using convict labour and funding from the Colony's monopoly on the rum trade. The building of three two storey colonnaded buildings was completed in 1816.nnWhen Parliament is sitting, public access to the Chambers is restricted to the Visitors' Galleries. It is advisable to book in advance for Question Time in the Legislative Assembly, held at 2:15 pm daily on sitting days. On non-sitting days when the Chambers are not in use, you may also visit inside both historic chambers.
