The Barbatan of Žatec Gate is a roundel type and is one of the oldest in Central Europe. The construction of the Barbican was a revolutionary fortification novelty in its time, which primarily served as protection of the gate itself against direct artillery. In addition, the advance placement of the barbacan allowed the defenders to fire sideways and therefore better defense adjacent walls. The barbican of Žatec Gate is a roundel type and is one of the oldest built in Central Europe.
