Černá Věž

The black tower of Cheb Castle can be seen from several places in Cheb. Probably the most beautiful views of it are from the immediate vicinity of the castle and from the Sports and Recreation Area on the left bank of the river Ohře. It is quite characteristic of the city of Cheb and is also its symbol. The tower is considered to be the oldest building in Cheb. The tower was named black volcanic tuff, which was brought to the construction site from the nearby Komorní hůrka. This very hard stone is machined into large blocks, it is the so-called bossed masonry. The square tower stands on a square base 9 x 9 meters, is 18.5 meters high. The thickness of the masonry on the ground floor is three meters. The original entrance at a height of seven meters can be seen from the courtyard. Today's entrance from the passage was built in the 18th century. The Black Tower is a refuge tower, which used to be accessible only by a bridge or ladder at the level of the first floor. If necessary, it could be defended as a separate fortress. In peacetime, it did not serve residential purposes, its dark ground floor, accessible only through an opening in the ceiling, could be used as a prison or a famine. If you decide to go to the Black Tower, 109 steps await you. However, the reward for a challenging hike will be a view of the historic part of Cheb.

The black tower is part of the Eger Castle and can be climbed as part of a castle tour. From above you have a beautiful view of the castle area and a beautiful overview of the city. Definitely visit when you are in Eger.
