Мгер Симонян (12/10/2020)
After tasting the aromatic coffee and feeling a little invigorated, I set out from the Cafe for Steam, which is near the chapel of St. John the Baptist, to the territory of the residence of the Litomerice Diocese of the Roman Catholic Church. A small arched street Makhov leads to it. The tall white clock tower, which occupies a visually dominant position in the entire district, serves as a guiding landmark. The Makhova street itself, entirely consisting of one or two storey buildings of the past era, is unremarkable and does not differ at all from hundreds of similar ones throughout the Czech Republic. However, the entrance portal to the bishop's residence could not attract my attention. A special feature of the portal is the statues of two angels located in the corners. In the hands of one angel is a crown, and the other has a hat. Agree, such a combination is very interesting in itself. Apparently, by this the author wanted to symbolically emphasize the divine and earthly principle. Special attention is drawn to the inscription in Latin and Czech, inscribed on an oval medallion directly above the portal itself. Without any claims to accuracy, because I did the translation myself, the inscription reads as follows: "Founded by Yaroslav Francis Ignatius of the Sternbergs and laid this foundation while the Christian gates lie in ruins in the Ottoman Empire." Taking into account the fact that the residence itself was built in the years 1683-1701 - the period when the Ottoman Empire drank a lot of European blood - its mention in the inscription does not cause much confusion. It should be noted that the residence was built on the site of the former chapter building of the 11th century. The author of the project was the famous architect Guillo Broggia.

Nice landmark is worth seeing when you go to visit the city.

Part of the residence is also the Chapel of St. Lawrence, where the Litoměřice Bishop Cardinal Štěpán Trochta awarded the priesthood consecrations in 1968-1974. the later Archbishop of Prague and Cardinal Dominic Duke.

Beautifully laid out structure in the pure Baroque diocese architect G. Broggio. Still excellently maintained important monument.

Today's residence building was built according to the plans of Giulio Broggio in the years 1683-1701. The two-storey building is built facing the river and together with the cathedral it forms a distinctive landmark of the city, has an axial buttress, is divided by pilasters and a terrace, to the north there are two shallow wings. It houses the Chapel of St. Lawrence.
