In 2007, Axel Barton, Gerhard Rehberg, Konrad Herz, Gerhard Teulings, Hans Schaper, Hardo Mählich and Hans Jürgen Bauwirt founded the association "Kulturgut Bergbau" with the aim of building a memorial for the unfortunate miners in the north of Gelsenkirchen. The association commissioned Christiane Hellmich as the designer. On September 22, 2018, the finished memorial was inaugurated on the old part of the main cemetery in Gelsenkirchen-Buer.
