Location is cool, price is fine, I went there 3 years in a roll every time they updated their new awards, but, when you ask Art majors to judge utilities, that’s when you get a feel box with a sharp Metal object inside, casually cutting your fingers as you carefully insert your hand without the possibility of seeing what could happen.
Call me jaded for saying this, what happened to actual designs that serves a purpose while looking good is just a bonus.
BTW, if you want to stop handing out your stamps to useless, pretty gadgets, Red Dot, call me, I don’t charge that much xD
We loved the red dot design museum. Even in time of Covid you could touch everything. With gloves that were handed out of courses (at no extra charge).
The building is just fabulous - worth popping i to see a 1920s powerstation for this reason alone. There are many exhibits but they are all a bit static - I would have enjoyed more information about the design process or explaining why particular deigns were so significant. That said this is a very fine museum. On the friday we went we got a choose our entry price but happy to pay.
Modern design museum in an historical industrial building which used to be part of a coal production plant. A must visit when in Essen for everybody who is interested in seeing beautiful product design. There is a mini coffee at the ticket desk in case you are thirsty before or after the exhibition.
Design equals art and functionality. So this place shows us how everyday functional has transformed into gorgeous taps, harnesses, cars, screens, lamps and everything in between. And although it may seem trivial, just think about how much you love your new smart lamp or how much time you've spent choosing the perfect doorknob.
