The Altenburg towers on the highest of the Seven Hills of Bamberg and is one of the landmarks of the city. The castle grounds are freely accessible from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and you can either drive directly in front of the castle or use the parking lot below the castle . Then you should be good on foot, because the ascent is quite steep. Even if you cannot enter any building, the facility is still very worthwhile. We would have liked to have hissed a cyclist in the beer garden, but since we came on a Monday, the restaurant and beer garden were closed. A corner tower in the ring wall has a viewing terrace from which there is a beautiful view of the surrounding area. On the upper part of the 33 meter high keep from the 13th century hangs an iron basket, which was used to transmit fire signals in the direction of Giechburg, 20 km away. All in all a great castle in top condition! It is also worth taking a tour around the outside of the castle along the curtain wall.

Ancient castle, located on one of the 7 hills of Bamberg, with a beautiful view of the city. Born as a refuge for the inhabitants of Bamberg in 1109, it was purchased by the Princes-Bishops around 1250, who used it as a residence. Burned entirely in 1650, restored, it was then used as a prison. In 1800 it was bought by the city doctor, who completely restored it. Today you can visit. It also houses a restaurant inside. It can also be reached by car, there is a convenient parking area near the entrance.

If you want to see Bamberg and the surrounding area from a completely different perspective, you should go up to Altenburg Castle. The castle is in great condition and the restaurant is also recommended. There is also a public toilet. Here you can enjoy outside and switch off when the weather is nice. The view is amazing. Also from the tower. It is worth climbing the castle on foot. In the restaurant you can dine very well, but you can also only enjoy a coffee or other drinks. The staff is very friendly and accommodating and the prices are okay. When the weather is imperative, it is always worth staying there.
