Gutenberg Museum

Guttenberg Bibles...what more do I need to say

I was surprised by this museum, as it does not focus on Gutenberg's printing press alone, but on the entire spectrum of free press, journalism and democracy. If you are dedicated to these subjects, you might want to spend a day here. I do not think it is a place that will entertain your toddlers for a long time.

Museum itself is alright. Has great cultural aspect to it. Some of the displays were too “sculpted”, as in its fake artifact. Several floors of museum and interactive materials. However I gave it a one star because when the museum was near closing time, BEFORE the official closing time, they were Shoving a group of children, other guests, and us out of the museum. Telling us to leave now, yelling at us, and threatening physically. One guy poked a pen on my back and told me to get out now or else.. I turned around to push him and get him off of me then two other security guys shoved me down the stairs. horrible museum staff and would not recommend.

I enjoyed my visit, even with a mask in these Corona times. I used the audio tour in English and went through all of the various tour options using the headset. I most enjoyed learning about the history of paper making and how they can trace books based on the watermarks in the paper used. I also enjoyed the vault where you can compare two bible specimens. The gift shop also had a nice selection and I bought quite a lot, including post cards, stationary, wax sticks, and a monogram wax seal. I would definitely visit again. The tours are very relaxing, and it is nice to walk around Mainz afterward.
