This little town gets its medieval flair from the cobble stoned marketplace and the Genevaburg. In the castle is the Eifelmuseum with interesting displays and information. There are markets and concerts to provide entertainment and shopping for locals and visitors. Ample restaurants, ice cream parlors and stores satisfy a variety of needs.. I can recommend this place for a short visit or a longer vacation.

Good museum about the slate mine, including local historic museum.

Lovely looking castle and its fortification walls that you can walk through. Nice interior part of the castle and surrounding town!

I loved this place. I had a really good time here with my dad. So fun! It was a really nice place to spend the day. I really liked the weather and the castle was incredible

The museum, located inside the Genoveva burg, shares a lot of information about the area from a geological, historical and cultural point of view. The highlight of the exhibitions is the tunnel system underneath the castle where the visitor can first hand experience the way the „Schiefer“ was mined and turned into the world famous roof plates decorating buildings not only in the town of Mayen. Unfortunately all the descriptions are written in German but there is an audio guide in English. The Genoveva Castle was erected in 1280 by Archibishop Heinrich von Finstingen. The castle has been rebuilt several times since first being destroyed in 1689.
