Honestly, when I applied here I thought the campus was in or at least just outside of Munich (and that is not the case!) but the location is actually really nice. Straubing is right on the Danube River which is beautiful all year round, and in the Summer there are plenty of restaurants and cafes to sit and eat/drink at in the pedestrian zone. There are also plenty of events organized by the Uni and students (including parties, sport practice/events, dancing lessons and some clubs) so it seems like there really is always an option if you want to go out and do something. The campus itself is still pretty small but they’re working on adding more buildings, and it’s very close to the River which is another plus! I’m in the Chemical Biotechnology major and it’s been challenging, but it’s also pretty cool to go into a relatively new program, and I think the situation here will continue to improve as more buildings open and more students come here!
In Straubing there is a ban on alcohol in the city center and in the green areas e.g. B. on the Danube. Something like that doesn't belong in a university town! If I get drunk in the beer garden in downtown Straubing, that's okay. But definitely not a few steps away with your own beer. Then it's illegal! If you can live with this absurdity, it is otherwise a nice university location where the administration and some lecturers are still committed to the well-being of the students. Not everyone can and does not want to study in Munich or other overcrowded cities. Smaller university locations are a good choice. For some lectures (especially in the direction of an extension) you have to go to Freising for lectures - very sustainably. Video transmission would be the key here.
I really like the campus. I'm currently in the 6th semester, so I already got a good impression of the TUM Campus Straubing. The campus is still very young and is still growing rapidly, but you are already getting to know a lot of new people who come from all over the world and want to study in Straubing. Professors, coordinators and students are all open-minded and eager to tackle new things and positively develop the campus. Straubing itself is becoming more and more student-friendly, there are plenty of activities such as SUP on the Danube, beach volleyball, ... and also lovely pubs and lively flat-share parties.
I think you will be happy here if you are enthusiastic about the subject, because the location will certainly not spoil your mood. If the place of study is of course important to you, and the subject is only a side effect for one or the other, of course, then you can make it easy for yourself and enjoy yourself in an established student city like Regensburg :)
I personally cannot agree to the negative reviews. In my opinion, something bigger is emerging in Straubing and the campus, with its focus on sustainability, biotechnology and bioeconomy, is right on time. This also shows the fact that massive investments are being made in a new laboratory and research building on the banks of the Danube.
Otherwise, the campus is very familiar, the student-prof-proximity is great. They are always open to the students.
TUM itself already stands for top quality, as can be seen in Straubing. Teaching and research are outstanding, the laboratory conditions in Straubing are also cool.
I personally think that the city itself has a lot to offer, including Gäuboden folk festival, beautiful town square, lots of local recreation and above all the Danube. In addition, the rental prices are really low compared to Regensburg, Landshut or Munich (two rooms with 60sqm for around 450 euros cold). That is already a house number.
For me, it's all charming. I not only like the range of courses and the campus, but also the surrounding area. I feel super comfortable! So full number of stars.
Have I looked at the little house in the Gäuboden the facts with my two brothers, one studied in Munich, the other in Regensburg. Sorry, but fun and a great time, with only 300 - 400 students looks a bit different and probably takes place elsewhere :). The location is ok, not far from the Danube and close to a sandpit, which is probably very questionable in summer as a beach bar. No matter who has a car and absolutely wants to study here, in his spare time, he can go to Regensburg or Deggendorf for parties or friends. In terms of competence, as a woman I can not say anything bad against the TUM, especially since my own family members work for it (although in Munich) and there is no reason for that. As for the campus in Straubing, well. Maybe it was a good idea for the city to get something more self-esteem by the actually unauthorized title Uni-Stadt (TUM is the University of the City of Munich), but as a student I would not know what to do here or from the student's point of view could highlight it and would not recommend it to my more active friends. For me, it was all about the proximity to Regensburg, but since I have given me 2 specialties to choose from, I will now take the THD, a lot more students, more party, top references and I'm also Ruck Zuck in Regensburg and even as jerk Zuck in Munich, Passau or Landshut. For me, the campus size is really very important :) :), but of course does not apply to everyone. At least the campus is new and the name Munich is in it :)! I recommend, just take a look and even compare the possibilities and locations!
