On November 16, 1963, by means of the law number 40 on Postal Communications, the Post Office was created, as a dependency of the Secretary of State for Public Works and Communications, to regulate the operation of the postal service in the national territory. The General Post Office operated until November 15, 1985 was created by law 307, the current Dominican Postal Institute, an autonomous body, led by a Board of Directors.
