Hostel Viejamar

Could be paradise if it weren’t for the bad management and staff. The hostel didn’t have electricity, water, or bathrooms for 4 hours a day from 1-5pm, yet NO ONE told any of the guests upon check-in. I had spoken to all 4 volunteers already, and none of them said anything about it. Some volunteers don’t do their jobs (e.g, forget to tell you the rules, don’t collect money when they’re supposed to, and charge you extra for things you didn’t know). Then they blame you for not knowing the policies. One volunteer acted very condescending to me and another guest when a friend came over to cook, demanding that our friend leave. No one told us this policy, and one volunteer refused to even ask the owner if it was OK. After another volunteer asked the owner, our friend still had to leave. Meanwhile the day before, NO ONE realized they let 4 non-guests into the hostel to use the lobby, pool, and beach area! Other hostels in town (Hermanos Perdidos) give you free drinking water, and in Viejamar you need to pay too. Overall there’s a lot of potential, but this place needs to improve management practices, volunteer training, and teach the volunteers how to talk to guests appropriately.

A super nice and chill hostel, where days goes by, either at the pool, chilling on the beach, or surfing. Absolutely amazing place for taking a breather and really relaxing. A big plus is that it has a kitchen, so you aren't forced to eat out all the time. I would recommend this hostel to friends.
