CHEAP LONG-TERM RENTAL IN MINDO, BUT VERY LIMITED IN SO MANY WAYS MINDO, EC – I was looking for a 1-month lease agreement with no deposit and I found this antiquated but well-known hostel. Well-known by locals, not travelers – and I’ll soon tell you why. For a $100 per month I received a standard room with a double-bed, private bathroom, a doorless, slim wood clothing armoire and a table with a plastic chair, unfashionably decorated with curtains that dated back to my grandparent’s time - seriously! That’s it. Cheaper rooms that are $60 - $85 per month come with a bed only. You’ll have to bring your own linens, unless the owner is in a nice mood and he might offer you a bed with sheets, comforter and pillows but he won’t wash or give you clean linens every week. They have a washer and dryer, but you can’t use it. They have a kitchen, but you can’t use it. They have a nice dining table without chairs in the reception that overlooked the park but I always got queer looks from the owner and his living partner Juan Norberto for bringing my food and enjoying at home. “You better eat outside,” suggested Alberto, who is the owner and also a school teacher in Mindo. Eat outside every day? Talk about expensive and uncomfortable. Most of the time, I want to enjoy my meals by myself in the comfort of my home. But, he clearly didn’t understand my needs and I didn’t research the place in-detail before moving in. So, who does stay and live at Hostal Arco Iris in Mindo? Local Ecuadorians who work seasonally and the occasional couple who want sexy time – and trust me you’ll hear them since the floor is made of baseboards and crack constantly as you walk. Not a place for backpackers or travelers. This place has zero-atmosphere, old moldy construction and furniture and décor that’s ancient and dusty and no amenities like a kitchen and laundry. The only redeeming quality and why I gave this place a 2-star rating is the view of Mindo’s Central Park, which is so nice to see and feel the energy of the town and the people in the morning when the sun would come up.
