Inside is the effigy of the Virgin of Monserrate, present and venerated in the place since 1961, and declared long before as Patroness of the Otavaleños. Formerly it was a ceremonial site of the natives whose practices valued water and other essences that from their worldview attributed to them supernatural powers.

The grotto of the tunnel is a cave in which the image of the Virgin of Monserrate is exposed, the local tradition is to go to it and deposit a coin as an offering either to thank the favors received or to make requests to the Virgin .
