Chilcabamba

We stayed here the night before our summit of Cotopaxi. We arrived late and it was very obvious we had interrupted and annoyed the manager. He showed us to our room - we were instantly disappointed as we were in a cabin with a room next to ours, and what we thought was a shared bathroom. The manager opened the door to our very small room, with a queen bed and a night stand. We had booked the same room as the couple with us, and they got a completely different room with more living space and a private bathroom. We stayed until our guides came to get us the next day. We were staying at the refugio that night in order to summit Cotopaxi so did not need the room. (we originally booked this hotel for 3 nights, before, night of to keep our stuff, and the night after). Since we were not impressed and would not even be there the night of Cotopaxi, we asked to cancel our reservation. They agreed to charge us half the cost of the room for the cancelled nights - okay, we cancelled. But, we were charged the same price as our friends for what we thought was a shared, dorm style room. The communication was hard at the hotel, so I emailed the woman who recommended the hotel. (She worked for a travel company, and little did we know she recommended this hotel because they owned it). She informed me that we were in a suite... that is why we were charged the same amount as our friends. I described that we had a very small room, and there was a door next to ours with a different room number on it that was never opened the entire time we were there - she was adamant that that was our suite. Apparently the manager only showed us one room - and we should have assumed the other was ours as well. Overall, it was gorgeous. But the service was poor, and the booking is difficult. We heard of many other great places for way less expensive.

My wife and I stayed here in 2011 for two nights and had a lovely time!
