In the Middle Ages there was no sea port in Pärnu. At the request of the major merchants in Pärnu, it was ordered by the Russian Empress Catherine II to set up moles to prevent it. Construction work ended in 1869 and thus the rise of sea trade in Pärnu started. At that time, mainly timber and flax were transported from Pärnu. The two-kilometre long moles have remained unchanged and become popular walking destinations for holidaymakers.

The stone walkway shown in your photo is not easy to walk on - which is a pity because it might be a nice promenade. But the beach is great with silky soft sand and nude bathing is good too
