Washa Mikael Rock Hewn Church

Washa Michael is a 4th century built Church in Ethiopia. To be exact it was at 320A.D. that the church was curved out of the bed roch by the twin brother Kings named Abrha & Atsebeha. Abraha & Atsebeha built so many churches in Ethiopia. The Washa Michael church used to serve as a pilgrimage center for many Ethiopians across its borders. It was during the second world war the church structure was bobmed by the invading forces. Yet the reminants of the church structure tells the skill, the depth of arctecture used and the magnitude of care given in the details.

I was shocked to find the cave unattended when I visited, it got worse when I saw signatures and scratches left by what I assume are disrespectful vandals. I’m hoping I caught the care takes at a bad time and they do better in the future. The location it self was great, an incredible reminder of an ancient civilization

Just 1 hour walk from center of city. (Via German Embassy) Neglected history from 4th century. Most part of roofing has fallen and remains are seen on ground. Caretakers of the church live in the compound probably you have to call out when you arrive. If you have 4×4 , you can drive all the way to the church via Yeka Michael church. Just follow Google map or strava .

This is the oldest church in Addis Ababa

One of my favorite places from my childhood until now. This is the place where Yeka Michael comes from and I suggest to you to see this place if you need solution for your inner peace. Currently in the same place there is a church called Abune Teklehaymanot.
