Great place to walk from Gravesend using the Saxon Shoreway footpath along the sea wall embankment over looking the River Thames . You can park at the Gravesend Marina car park ( pay & display ) . You can also cycle to Shornmead Fort using National cycle route which runs along side the old Canal, past the Police Tactical Training Centre ( on your left ) . There are old swing bridges over the old canal ( on your right ). The other side of the Canal ( further right ) is the main Railway line from Higham to Gravesend. There are some pedestrian crossing points ( public footpaths not for cycles ) They are extremely dangerous because of the high speed trains. In Summer frogs, toads, voles and birds can been seen along the route. The route you are riding or walking is the old railway line , single track bed before the new double track high speed line was built. The cycle path is paved.... Stick to the cycle route and about halfway you come to Stone Marshes there is a concrete road ( left ) that goes out to Shornmead Fort. You are crossing a Firing Range . Marked on a OS map as ‘Danger Area’ . When the Red flags are up this road will be closed. You can continue to Hoo Junction there’s another crossing here but it’s closed. You can continue to Canal Road which eventually leads to Lower Higham. Directions in brackets are as if your travelling from Gravesend to Higham >>> West to East direction.

A fun bike destination, surrounded by moorland, wild ponies and the occasional teenager on a scrambler.

Interesting place the visit, shame it's been left to ruin and not more preserved like coalhouse fort (opposite side of river) but an interesting walk nethertheless

Nothing says date night like a collapsing fort on the bank of the Thames
