A good place for introspection as, rather strangely, although next to the embankment, there is no view of the river as it is a sunken garden. There is plenty of seating which unfortunately is spoiled (literally) by transients and the homeless ilk who also seem to be compelled to leave a trail of detritus behind them as some sort of marker. There are two nude sculptures here, one rather fine one by Gilbert Ledward. The other is by Epstein and is of less artistic value, in my uneducated opinion.

Sunken and terraced formal garden laid out in 1964 on Luftwaffe bombed site and named after Thomas More’s son-in-law. The layout so redolent of the Sixties, all now faded and past its prime with a posing bronze nude (in her prime) and an Ur-moment unfinished Jacob Epstein panel adding some relief and counterpoise to an area that has a distinctive melancholic air. A surplus of bleached benches here and a posh dedicated 🐕 toilet. Surely nothing to sniff at.
