An outstanding property and an outstanding visit. The family living in the house are welcoming and manage to integrate their life-style with the proprietorial obligations towards a significant historic property containing an eclectic collection of fascinating artifacts. The cakes and tea were excellent. Everything was well cared for and appropriately maintained. Far more interesting than a meticulously manicured, sterile museum piece!
We visited today as a group of 6. Having paid £25 to get in, we were really disappointed - the property hadn't been prepared for visitors (the gardens were very overgrown, the house was very dusty/untidy and the items to look at are pretty random and often unrelated to the house's history). To top it off, the elderly female owner was one of the rudest people we've encountered and we're a very friendly bunch! Her daughter, on the other hand, was a delight as was her son on the door. Until the property is done up, has a polite proprietor and there is a clear story to tell, our view is that it's not ready for public visitors.
We were very disappointed with this visit, having looked forward to seeing the interior of an Elizabethan manor which is rarely open to the public. The house and garden are potentially very attractive, but we all felt that little effort was put in to prepare them, even dust the furniture or remove modern stereo sets and other bits and pieces around the house, which seemed incongruous and could easily have been hidden for the brief period of its opening. The talk by the daughter was very interesting and honest, but the lady owner was unnecessarily abrupt and unwelcoming when asked politely for some information. With a little more care and preparation from the owners, the experience could be vastly improved.
Fascinating visit. Quirky old house with loads of history and lots to see. Great introduction from Giles.
This place really doesn't match up to what their website makes it out to be!! The owners really need to invest in a management company to run it, undertake basic maintenance in the house and more particularly, the gardens, and bring the experience of an Elizabethan house back into something more intetesting?! Sorry.
