Fabulous. Emerging like a whale drawing breath, visit anytime of the year, this place should marvel you. 5000 years old. I won’t spoil it with pictures. Find it yourself. Enjoy.

Belas Knap Long Barrow, Gloucester Impressive entrance is a false entry and was possibly intended as a spirit door which would allow the dead to access their bones and partake in rituals. Constructed in 3000BC and has been used for successive burials over two centuries. Four burial Chambers have been identified within the mound along with 38 skeletal remains(adults and children male and female). Radiocarbon dating estimates the age of the skwletans to be early neolithic. Archaeologists consider that 11 skwletans were in a seated position. It is estimated that their life styles were based on cattle herding and small scale farming and hunting. Other grave goods include flint flakes, pottery and animal bones.

We visited Belas Knap whilst staying in Winchcombe and a good part of the enjoyment of the site is the hilly walk to get there, with a number of places to stop along the way and take in the panoramic landscape below you. The site itself is interesting archeologically but don't expect to spend much more than 15-20 minutes there. As part of a good walk it's well worth doing.

Great walk through the woods to the ancient landscape revealing a stunning long barrow with interesting information boards.Completed the day with a circular walk across a varied landscape with a pleasant river valley.

This ancient monument is dated at around 5,500bc. Used as a place to place dead as over 30 human skeletons and remains found dating back to 3,700bc. Probably part of a complex set of structures that include Stonehenge, Avebury Stone circle and many other long barrows found in this region. Who constructed this and what it was used for for 2000 years is still under debate. Visit this site and enter the west facing chamber and a large sarcen stone is carved into a seat and fire stained other sarcen stones are directly in front. The location has an excellent natural protection due to being on the top of a steep hill, offering stunning views of the country side. Free admission.
