We came to buy some baby rats at the weekend. The place is great and most of the staff seem lovely. We were told the rats had been handled regularly but as soon as the lady opened the cage the rats were frantic and squeeked when held. She said they must have been spooked by something earlier but when I went to pick up what I thought looked like one of the slightly calmer rats the lady told me off for touching it (kind of weird since I wanted to know which animals were friendly before I bought one for the kids). She was also snarky when I put my hand out in front of the cage to see which rats would come to me, saying that wasn't going to show which rats were friendly (?? well I had to try something..)We ended up having to point at rats we liked the look of and she put them in a box. I had a really bad feeling about the whole process although at that point the kids were really excited. Needless to say these rats aren't remotely tame. I don't think they've ever been handled and are going to require a LOT of work. I bred rats for five years and have owned them for ten years. Absolutely none of them were ever as unsocialised and wild as these.
