Very interesting. Glad I went. Be careful when wet but definetly worth the walk. Make sure you look in shed ... amazing mosaic

The remains of a Roman villa discovered in the early 19th century. Once a large complex with impressive underfloor heating and outbuildings, all that remains now are the wall outlines, glimpses of the impressive scale of the site and a rather stunning mosaic floor housed in a nearby building, which is unfortunately closed at the moment, but still visible through the windows. The area is very picturesque amongst rolling fields and farmland. Access is gained via a half kilometer walk down a relatively steep and uneven pathway. 30 minutes is more than ample to see what is on offer.

Lovely open air location for a country stroll. You'll need to use your imagination, along with some 'artist's impressions' found on the all-weather display boards to fully realise the vast size and importance of this Roman Villa. Whoever lived here was a very important person, with no fewer than three bathing places for their household. Evidence of a hypercaust (under-floor heating system) suggests that this was a very wealthy individual. Located close to water, the River Evenlode, there is also a small building where you can, on the odd occasions when it is open, see the fine mosaic floor that once graced this fine villa. Unfortunately on our visit, which had a fair number of visitors for a Bank holiday weekend (about 20), it was locked and closed; viewing restricted to peering through the window. Some creativity here is required to enable the protection of the mosaic's security but to enhance the access available to the casual visitor. Car park on the main road, about 500 metres away up the slight hill via a bridleway, or on a footpath through the adjacent wood.

I love this place you can just wonder in anytime. Surrounded by the beautiful Oxfordshire countryside. You need to pay to have a look inside the building that holds the impressive mosaic but you can also look through the window when its not open.

I'd been meaning to visit here for years, but had been told there wasn't much to see. But I was pleasantly surprised. There's also some lovely peaceful walks in the surrounding area.
