Considering surgery, whether it’s to enhance your visual appearance from choice or as a result of having previous surgery due to illness, is one of the most important decisions you will ever make. Only you can make that decision and no matter how much support, recommendations and referrals you receive from friends and family it is you that signs on the dotted line to proceed. Having experienced this first hand I can only reiterate how important is to find out about the options available to you. Have the options laid out in plain English, not medical terms that actually mean nothing when your state of mind is already under considerable pressure from having to take this step in the first place. You need to feel 100% confident in the Surgeon, trust them, understand them, and, most importantly, be rest assured that they know you and have managed your expectations totally. By that I mean, you know before you’re wheeled down to the operating theatre, the chances of success or otherwise, what can be expected when you come round after the anaesthetic, what you have to do mentally and physically along that road to recovery once the surgery has taken place. Jasper Gill was my Surgeon, nothing was too much trouble no matter what time of the day or night. He outlined the pro’s and con’s, using diagrams and photographs providing expert advice based on years of experience so I totally understood the procedure. With his warmth, support and sense of humour he outlined what could be expected during the recovery period, (well I knew I wouldn’t be doing any retail therapy for a few days!), medication required, for how long etc and from this we were able to reach a decision that both my husband and I were happy with. Of course, there will always be minor elements of doubt due to the fear of the unknown – however, Jasper Gill is one of the leading consultant surgeons in the south west and I am in no doubt that with his comprehensive knowledge and expertise in breast cancer surgery he not only saved my life but made the journey as painless both physically and emotionally as he could.
