After living near Cambridge for some 19 years, I finally went on a punt ride. I have for a long time been aware of the Bridge of Sighs in Cambridge and as a photographer who loves architecture, and a person that is interested in History, I was not disappointed. The Bridge of Sighs is a covered bridge at St John's College, Cambridge University. It was built in 1831 and crosses the River Cam between the college's Third Court and New Court. The bridge was a filming location for Elizabeth: The Golden Age in 2007 and The Theory of Everything in 2014.

The Bridge of Sighs is a landmark of St John’s College, and one of the most recognisable pieces of architecture in Cambridge. It is the only covered bridge to cross the River Cam, and the only College bridge built in the Victorian Gothic style. Since its construction in 1831 it has featured in thousands of photographs and artistic projects, as well as appearing in films including The Theory of Everything (2014) and Elizabeth: The Golden Age (2007).

If one wants to understand the Bridge of Sighs, one must first understand bridges more generally. Bridges are so vital to our way of life that there is a Wikipedia article called "List of Bridges" that lists bridges. The Bridge of Sighs at St John's, which ironically doesn't make it onto Wikipedia's list, is a remarkable specimen. It is rumoured that in the early 1400s, a gentleman would walk across the bridge every day hoping for it to collapse under his weight. Each day, the bridge refused to give way, and the man became exasperated. The bridge was named after this exasperation. I've used the bridge regularly to travel from Third Court to New Court and I can't remember it failing. At other times, I've used it to travel from New Court to Third Court, and it performs flawlessly. I'm not afraid to say it: this bridge works!
