Parked at the side of a road, was incredibly muddy in places on the walk up/down and not really sign posted either (we followed Google maps so not overly sure if there where any better routes up) was worth a visit once there. Our dog certainly enjoyed the walk 🐕
Just an unexceptional circle of standing stones in a clearing on a peak in Derbyshire. At least until you read that it's been there for 4,000 years. Then you begin to think of the many ceremonies, gatherings and maybe festivals which have been held there since it was first erected.
It feels like a special place for various reasons. First it's setting high above the surrounding countryside gives it a feeling of isolation and security. And in the past, before you could drive up there, it would have been a tiring hike to reach the spot. That adds to the mystique of the place.
It was possibly a refuge for wildlife which would have made it an important site to hunt game. Along with the bilberries and other wild foods, it would have seemed a fertile and fruitful place. A lovely spot to sit and contemplate while enjoying your lunch.
This was a lovely walk up from footpath just before Stanton Lees. It is quite rough with none of the path improved with compacted gravel, with tree roots, significant vegetation and shallow muddy moments to pass through in late summer. It is under full forest canopy most of the way. It is a gentle gradient through-out. Up to the top and a circuit back down via Earl Grey Tower is about 2 miles.
Because of the nature of the path, sturdy footwear would be advisable.
The nine ladies stone circle is a beautiful place. There's good energy in the area and the people that visit are always friendly.
Very nice and easy walk up to the circle. The circle clearing is very pretty and the myth surrounding it makes it more special. If you carry on the walk there is more Bronze Age rock monuments and ravines which are almost more impressive than the circle. Definitely see the circle though ,the myth is cool and the clearing is incredibly pretty.
