You probably already know this is one of the greatest museums in the world. I'm not going to address the many different exhibits that are in the permanent collection but I do want to talk about the Alice Neel show which is going on now and I believe extends through April and May 2021 perhaps even longer. This is the show you do not want to miss. Alice is a great painter it's as simple as that. I figurative painter from the very beginning even during the years of abstract expressionism. She was friends with many of the great abstract expressionist artists of the day as well as simultaneously being able to be friends with the leading pop artists as they took over from the AB EX. for example there's a portrait of Andy Warhol in the show. There's also a portrait of Robert Smithson the great conceptual landscape artist. This shows you what a broad range a friend she had and the other artists who respected her. I'm not going to try to describe the art in this review. It simply has to be seen to be appreciated and seeing it in real life is a million times better than seeing it on a computer screen. Her paint handling the sense of light in the yard above all her scale none of these things can be understood or experienced when you're seeing the art on a computer screen. So I'll close by urging you to visit the museum which is in New York City main entrance on 83rd Street.
My favorite museum in NYC. I was fortunate enough to live in walking distance of this place and always loved coming here. The place is huge and there’s so much to look at. Plan on having a lot of time set aside if you any the full experience. If you’re trying to decided what museum to go to I’d recommend this one. Admission is donation based which is great if you cannot afford a lot. My favorite part are the reconstructed rooms - it makes you feel like you’re waking around in a castle. 🏰
Due to COVID you’ll need to schedule a time for your visit online! The MET is still free (always good to donate if you can!) for NYC residents with NY ID. It’s nice to not have as many people inside the museum but some wings do get more crowded. The MET remains my favorite museum to visit. It’s a great place to spend hours exploring. I guarantee you’ll always be able to find something new you never knew was there before!
The MET is the most visited museum in New York. They’re open now and tickets should be reserved ahead online. Face covering is a must and temperature check before entering. Weekends get a bit crowded so weekdays work better if you don’t like crowds. Do check out Jacob Lawrence in the modern gallery and the Lattice Detour show on the roof garden- both great exhibition!
One of the best museums in the world! Amazing collection with over 2 million items. Subsequently, I recommend planning what you want to see ahead of time or consider a membership if you will return. Photos are generally permitted, but no video or video calls. Food and drinks are pricey and bathrooms are few. Alternatively you can buy cheap street food out front. Enjoy!
