The Department of Oral Medicine and Periodontology of the Study of Dental Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine in Rijeka was founded in 2002 and the head of the department has since become prof.dr.sc. Sonja Pezelj-Ribaric.
Since the founding of the Dental Department at the Medical Faculty in Rijeka in 1973, all courses in dental medicine (including today's Department of Oral Medicine and Periodontology) have been organized within the Department of Dentistry. In the late 1970s, today's Department of Oral Medicine and Periodontology operates within the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. With the last reorganization in 2002, the Department of Oral Pathology became the Department of Dental Diseases and the Department of Oral Medicine and Periodontology.
Today, the Department has 6 full-time employees and 3 external associates. In addition to lectures, clinical and preclinical exercises, seminars and scientific work, employees who are specialists in oral pathology and periodontology work as specialists in KBC Rijeka.
The Department organizes and conducts continuing education courses in dental medicine scored by the Croatian Chamber of Dental Medicine.
