Church of St. The 15th-century Mary is known for her murals that fill almost all of her interior. What is shown in the frescoes and painted by the masters is easy to find on the internet. But seeing the murals live is a lot harder. First of all, you will find on the pages that the church is open all day to those that are only open during Mass. When we were there, it was closed, and when asked if it was possible to see the interior, we received a response from the villagers that the keys were held by the Reverend, but it is better not to touch it because he does not like being annoyed with it. And we didn't touch it and we didn't see the murals ...
Nice old town

Church of St. Marija is located at the foot of Oprtalj, along the road leading to Zrenj, Šterna and Buje, in the shade of cypresses lined up in front of it. Built in the 15th century, the church was painted by several masters. The painter is signed on the triumphal arch, and the painting is dated. It is about Clerigin from Koper who in 1471 painted the Annunciation under which there are three saints on each side. The composition of the Annunciation is framed by architectural elements: two fluted columns of Corinthian capitals carry an architrave decorated with an antique tendril. An angel in bright clothes on the left side of the arch kneels in front of a high wall walled with a crown behind which rise the treetops. Mary kneels with her arms crossed over her chest, in front of a high book stand, and behind the four-poster bed. A clear drawing, a pronounced use of antiquated motifs, and an attempt at illusionist depiction as expressive means of the Renaissance speak to the modern currents that influenced Clerigine.
Other painters show non-Mediterranean, northern influences. On the south wall, next to the sanctuary, the cycle of Mary's life is depicted, and the author creates in the spirit of soft Gothic. Opposite it, between two borders of acanthus tendrils, are six scenes painted in Knitterungstil. In the upper register, the Mother of God on the throne is surrounded by angels, and on the side by depictions of St. Roca and Sebastian. In the lower register in the middle of St. George kills the dragon, and on the side are Sts. Christopher and Peter. Under the feet of St. Christopher is Meluzina, a two-tailed mermaid with a crown on her head. With St. Petra is described as a donor - a farmer (with him is a kosir) who had enough money to order this display. The rest of the frescoes in the church of St. Mary belong to the Christological cycle, which consists of 24 scenes, and is attributed to the so-called. To the Colorful Master whose subalpine currents have been simplified in these works.
