Oprtalj-Portole, located on a hill that we reached from a narrow plateau on the south side from the direction of Motovun. In our opinion, it is one of the most picturesque towns in northern Istria. We enjoyed every step of the way through this medieval place. The view from the plateau in front of the Loggia is breathtaking. Oprtalj or Portole, as we read in the Italian version of its name, was once a fortress surrounded by walls on which houses were built, among which the ancient city gates just emerge. In front of the door there is a large Venetian loggia with lapidary, and next to it on high ramparts there is a plateau from which the view reaches the sea. Among the attractions are several beautiful churches and narrow streets of the old town. Beautiful Parish Church of St. Juraj, which is adorned with a unique bell tower whose top does not have the shape of a pyramid characteristic of Istrian bell towers, but has remained in its original tower form, was built in 1526. It is located in the city, on the square. It has been mentioned since 1202. The church was built in the 15th century on the site of an older one, which was built in today's church. It is the work of the builder Majstor of Kranj (1526) and was enlarged in the 17th century. The church is of great beauty and has valuable and rich equipment (altarpiece of San Giorgio, work by Baldassare D'Anne from the beginning of the 17th century; episcopal throne of 1758; organ by Gaetano Callida from the end of the 18th century, etc.); and the bell tower is from 1746. We were pleasantly surprised by the beauty and richness of the church.

Wonderful church with three naves in white stone with a characteristic truncated bell tower. Located on the top of the Oprtalj hill (Oprtalj). I recommend leaving the car outside the village and taking a slow walk among the houses.
