CRIME On August 13, 1942, at around 9:00 am, the Ustashas suddenly stormed the village of Kusonje and immediately captured the locals, mostly women and minor children. Most of them were pushed into the church, 473 of them Serbs because so many could stop, they threw straw and locked the door. They poured gasoline on the wooden door of the church and lit a fire. The church began to burn, and Serbian children and women screamed in pain, which was unbearable. Everything alive burned down both the church and the victims. The Ustashas laughed and celebrated their "success." A part of the victims, about 250 Serbs, were thrown by the Ustashas into deep wells, several dozen which were then buried in the ground. Only one woman, who had a knife wound to her neck, managed to get out from under the pile of corpses and survive. She later recounted what she had seen. The remaining inhabitants of Kusonje and Serbian refugees were taken to concentration camps: Jasenovac, Stara Gradiška, Danica and others. Older male children aged 13 to 16 were taken to Croatian villages for forced labor.
