THE BEAUTY OF BARANJE

According to historical data, it is known that St. Juraj was a Roman officer who died a martyr's death during Diocletian's persecution of Christians in 303 AD. Because of his acceptance of Christianity and the non-recognition of pagan gods, he was sentenced to death by beheading. The date of his death, April 23 (historically questionable), is inscribed in the Church as a memorial to him. As a saint, he is equally celebrated by the Catholic and Orthodox churches. You can reach St. George's Church either from the Kneževo castle by walking through the park of Mary Kristina or directly from the main road leading from Beli Manastir to the border with Hungary. The church is situated in the green of the park. It was built in 1929. in non-Byzantine style. It's really interesting architecture. The tower is located in front of the main entrance and is connected to the church by a porch. Above the entrance is a picture of St. Georgia killing a dragon. Particularly prominent are the red and white cubes on the façade that decorated both the tower and the church. The church was locked so we couldn't see the interior.
