By decree of Queen Maria Theresa, the foundation of the Catholic Church in Bjelovar was finally started on April 10, 1765, and the foundation stone was blessed on May 12, 1765. In a solemn manner in 1770, a cross was erected on the tower. Construction of the church was completed in 1771. On the Feast of St. Theresa of Avila, October 15, 1772, the church is blessed. The church has been a parish since 1772 and was consecrated on October 15, 1775 by Zagreb's bishop Joseph Galjuf. Until the earthquake of 1880, the church also had six side altars: St. Theresa of Avila, Blessed Virgin Mary, Vol. Joseph, st. Ivan Nepomuk, Vol. Apollonius and St. Joseph Kalasantsiysky, founder of the Order of Piarists. Very valuable Olar paintings made them. They were sent to Vienna for reconstruction in 1847, but were fraudulently detained in Vienna, and worthless paintings were sent to Bjelovar instead. Due to its urban and artistic importance, the church, as well as the whole pianist assembly, was proclaimed a cultural monument and placed under the protection of the Croatian Conservation Institute. This central city church of Pope Benedict XVI's De maiore spirituale bono, as of December 5, 2009, was erected at the Cathedral of the Bjelovar-Križevci Diocese, based in Bjelovar.
