Church of St. Stephen (remains)

St Stephen Church originates from Pre-Romanesque period and is located in the southeast part of the city, near St. John Fortress, called Pustijerna. Remains of the Church, collapsed in the earthquake in 1667, have recently been partially restored. The church was mentioned in 949 by Byzantine emperor Constantine Porphyrogenitus in his famous book "On the Administration of the Empire" (in which he also described the origins of Dubrovnik/Ragusa or, as new archelogical, linguistic and other interdisciplinary history researchs have shown, one version of the very early history of Dubrovnik) as the church which houses the relics of St. Pancras. On the same place, a larger Romanesque Church of St. Stephen was built by Croatian king Stjepan (Stephen) Miroslav and his wife queen Margarita (Margaret) in 948, when they together visited Dubrovnik. They decorated the church richly and queen Margarita donated two pieces of wood of the Holy Cross.

The church Stefan is another barrack masterpiece that can be admired in Dubrovnik. It is worth getting here, especially since many tourists skip this church when visiting the city.
