About St. George the Martyr Church The oldest historical news about the parishes of Medjugorje and the titulars of their churches dates back to 1334. Archdeacon John lists 11 parishes in his list of "inter Dravam et Muram", including St. George's Parish in Trnje. The parish certainly had its own church, but we do not know what it was. Međimurje was in close contact with the nearby Alpine culture and there is no reason to believe that there was no church in this place. Speaking of the probable fate of the old church, dr. Kolarić says: "It is most likely that the old parish church stood on the site of today, was wooden and probably demolished during the period of Protestantism spread in Međimurje between 1570 and 1580. Thereafter, a new brick parish church was built, since 1660. He mentions that the whole church was built and that on the north side there was a sacristy with a vault on the north side. " From the records of canonical visits in 1660, we find very valuable information about the parish church, the way the pastor is maintained, the organ service, and about the individual villages that belong to the parish, with an accurate listing of the number of households and their surnames. Further very interesting information about the parish and parishioners is provided by the canonical visits from 1692. The canon of Zagreb, Nikola Nadaždi, visited the parish of Sv. Juraj in Trnje and wrote down the following information: The parish church was built and well covered with oak planks. The church had two altars, the main st. St. George and St. Anthony of Padua, who, like the church itself, were not yet consecrated. The church was rebuilt somewhat earlier, as evidenced by the whitewashed walls, the church tower and the sacristy. However, all this hard work of worthy pastors and parishioners was destroyed in just one day. On April 30, 1738, Međimurje was hit by a massive earthquake. At dawn the earth shook violently. During the day, soil tremors repeated several more times. The consequences were dire and grave. The church in Trninac was also damaged in the earthquake. It was badly damaged. As a result, the pastor Marko Šubarić (1729 - 1763) began restoring the badly damaged church. It seems, however, that this repair was only temporary in nature, since it is mentioned 11 years later that the parish church was rebuilt and built. We owe this report to the visitor Vuk Kukuljevic, who visited the town of Međimurje in the spring of 1747 as archdeacon of Bekes. But very soon there was a need for the extension of this church, as the parish church became too small for the increasing number of believers of the Church Extension, started and completed by pastor Juraj Vulama (1764 - 1799). Such a beautifully restored one could experience a solemn dedication to the general joy of many parishioners. The consecration was made on September 12, 1784 by Antun Zlatarić, bishop of Zagreb and canon of Zagreb. Thanks to comprehensive restoration work started by pastor Stjepan Markusic and completed by pastor Darko Kelemenic at the beginning of XXI. centuries, original paintings from 1799 were restored or restored. In 1984, a marble altar was erected in the parish church with a restored shrine. The power of Sts. Cardinal Archbishop Franjo Kuharić dedicated the altar to the great joy of all parishioners From 1984 onwards (notes by the pastor and Ivan Baric) The church bell tower still strongly dominates the environment. Pastor Stjepan Markusic arrives before Christmas 1987 from Gaj near Pakrac. During Pastor Stjepan Markusic leaves the parish for the Feast of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in 1999. He was remembered among the faithful and unquestioned as a pastor "builder" by all. But his work did not remain without further echo. August 29, 1999 Chaplain from the parish of Lepoglava Darko Kelemenić arrives for the pastor here. First he started off slowly and with small renovation projects. Then, with the incredible skill of managing the parish's funds, voluntary donations and personal responsibility, he embarked on ever-increasing projects for the restoration of ALL sacral buildings at the disposal of the parish of St. Juraj in Trnje. In the fertile years until 2020, the pillars, chapels, the parish court and the parish church itself shone through.
