The church was built in the 13th century, but was destroyed during the Turkish wars except for its tower. In 1594, when the town returned to Hungarian ownership for six years, a small new church was built from the remains of the sanctuary and sacristy, where an altar was erected in honor of the Holy Spirit. In 1728 Kristóf Festetics bought the Csurgó estate, then in 1731 he started the reconstruction of the church in Baroque style for eight years. During a road construction in 1962, old wall remains and tombs were discovered south of the church, but no detailed archaeological excavations were carried out.
