On November 3, 1873, the main primary school of the free royal city of Debrecen opened. Only boys could go to real school. From 1905 the real school was also a practicing school. Mihály Fazekas is named after the school year 1922-1923. The education reform of 1961 created an opportunity to make the institution a pure-profile high school. In line with old real-school traditions, special mathematics and foreign language teaching came to the forefront and coeducation began. From the academic year 2000/2001, bilingual education was started, in Hungarian-Spanish and Hungarian-French. As one of 25 upper secondary schools, the school is eligible for the European Parliament Ambassador School program launched by the European Parliament.
