Diplomatic relations, which were severed in the First World War, were started in 1918 by a military mission in Hungary led by the well-known Colonel Fernand Vix. On January 8, 1920, Jean Doulcet (wd) was appointed Chief Commissioner for Budapest, but he could not take his place. Maurice Fouchet arrived in the capital instead. Essentially, he created the embassy. In 1933, the embassy was moored at 17 Main Street, the former building of today's French Institute. There was no state of war between Hungary and France in the Second World War. In 1944-45, during the siege of Budapest, the embassy building on Fő utca was destroyed. Under the Interinstitutional Treaty, France received two residential buildings in Annex VI. district in Lendvay Street, so the embassy continued to operate there after World War II. The embassy was elevated to the rank of embassy on December 17, 1963. The French Institute was established in 1947, but at first it operated only in the scientific field, in 1961, after the opening of the building on Szekfű Street, it became a widely known cultural venue in the capital. The empty property on Main Street remained French property. The construction of the French Institute began in 1986 and finally took place on 25 May 1992. In the meantime, the embassy has outgrown the building on Lendvay Street, some offices have moved to the French Institute on Fő Street, and in 2005 the Economics Department is located at 13–15 Kossuth Lajos Square. opened an office in house no. On November 14, 2019, both the embassy and the consulate moved to Kossuth Lajos Square, so after several decades, the French left Terézváros.

It is a special experience for those walking in the diplomatic quarter and in the patinous villas to see this beautifully beautiful building.
