The kindergarten (popularly nicknamed ovi, rarely the nursery derived from the ancient name of the nursery “little toddler”) is a widespread institution in many parts of the world. In many places, it is part of the education system and serves as the first step in teaching children, while there are places where it functions as a pre-school (mostly in the US) or as a simple “babysitter”. The age of children attending kindergarten varies from country to country, with the two most common systems being either between 3 and 6 years of age or between 4 and 7 years of age.
