The interior is magnificent, a truly marvelous sight if I may say so. There is even an interactive exhibition about it the gives more insight about small details of the temple. In the shop one can buy extraordinary abbey beer as well. 10 out of 10 would go in again.
The church has an interesting way of guiding tourist. It's got a video system covering the details of the entire interior of the church, and one can move the cursor on the screen to find the object of interest. The system is unlocked by a stick given to you after you pay the admission. The church shop worth a visit as well. The soaps sold in the shop and taking the shape of roses and chrysanthemums are made of goat milk, according to the cashier.
Beautiful church and even more amazing the interior.
The most famous church in Sopron is the Church of the Assumption, Benedictine, Franciscan and Hungarian. These many names all cover a church, the famous Goat Temple, with a stone goat adorning its gate. Legend has it that an enthusiastic mecca scraped the treasure from which the first church was built.
The reality is much more prosaic than this: the church was enlarged by a donation from the Geissel family. As there is a goat in the family’s coat of arms, the donor’s symbol was placed over the gate. Why was this a generous donation? Henrik Geissel killed a citizen named János Büki, so he atoned for the community and the Lord.
The beautiful pointed, young-towered outer rail hides an insecure crumbling from Baroque ornaments. The Eszterházys and the Széchenyi people were also buried here for almost 150 years. Here he was crowned III. Also Ferdinand and two queens. Five times a national parliament was held here. When I entered the church, my words stopped for long minutes. The weight of the past and the golden flow of the Baroque have silenced him.
"The Benedictine Church or Church of the Assumption, popularly known as the Goat Church, is a Gothic church dedicated to the Assumption, built in the 13th and 14th centuries, on the southern side of Sopron's Main Square."
